12/31/2023 0 Comments Ayn rand was an avowed![]() One criticism of Rand derives from natural science, focusing on the extent to which her celebration of the autonomous man-her mythical version of the rugged individualist-flies in the face of what we know about biology. She also regarded marriage as an artificial constraint on those with the self-confidence and courage to live outside the “herd.” She was not only an avowed atheist, she would doubtless be pro-choice in today’s abortion debate. In fact, Kant’s austere, punishing discourse would likely frighten them.Īlas, today’s Randians-at least those affiliated with the conservative wing of the Republican Party (which is to say all Republicans)-are forced to tip-toe around Rand’s more controversial and embarrassing views. There’s a smug, self-congratulatory element to it.Īs far as traditional Western Philosophy goes, this infatuation with Rand is not something most students are likely to duplicate when reading the works of “real” philosophers-say, the writings of Baruch Spinoza or David Hume or Immanuel Kant. The two reasons why undergraduate students (and certain congressmen) get such a thrill out of Ayn Rand’s “Objectivism” philosophy: (1) it comes off as non-conformist and slightly “dangerous,” and (2) it unapologetically glorifies all those egotistical impulses we had as teenagers. Too much spaghetti, not enough meatballs. As amusing as this material is, it’s flimsy. (“Woman is not yet capable of friendship: women are still cats and birds or, at best, cows.”). ![]() But no matter what the Randians try to tell us, there’s no way you can base a life philosophy on her theories (“If any civilization is to survive, it is the morality of altruism that men have to reject.”) any more than you can base one on the writings of Nietzsche.

I'd be careful if I were the editorial staff here publishing stories like this. This is a terrible article that certainly shows a lack of understanding of how software security works well and the CVE system protects users, or it's a malicious article intended to cast Chrome as a boogeyman with dubious premises. As varenhizzle comments, Google is transparent about its bugs while Apple seems to sweep them under the rug or tell people about them months later while exploits get actively used to harm users that could be taking mitigating steps before a patch to keep themselves secure. That's not a bad thing and means Chrome is actually safer, not less secure. It means that the code is being actively policed and updated. The number of vulnerabilities getting CVEs is a good thing, not a bad thing. If you don't keep it updated you're going to be vulnerable. Well, yeah, that's true of every piece of software that touches the web, including the operating system. ![]() Users can fix these by updating to Google Chrome version 1.61." That means the vulnerabilities are only vulnerabilities if you're not updating the browser. This is absolutely correct and the article is horrible reporting made to create fear and stoke animosity toward Google's Chrome. All that said, I do think Safari's security is likely superior to Chrome's but not because it has fewer vulnerabilities listed. 12/31/2023 0 Comments Rose quartz near meThe Concord Enterprise noted it in 1892, while reporting on the funeral of Emerson’s widow Lidian: “A great pine stands near the head of grave, on which is paced a huge boulder of pink quartz in its native state. No one seems to know exactly where Emerson’s chunk of rose quartz came from or when it was installed, but it was certainly in place by September 1891, when its presence was remarked by a traveler. It holds the remains of numerous literary luminaries, including Louisa May Alcott, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Henry David Thoreau, buried near one another on Authors Ridge. ![]() Sleepy Hollow, like Mount Auburn, is a “rural” cemetery, laid out in a wooded tumble of glacial deposits. Starting in the late nineteenth century, you might find bereaved families who wanted to use them to commemorate their loved ones.Īn early and very prominent quartz monument was the one placed, belatedly and after much family discussion, upon the grave of philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882) at the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord, MA. If you are a quarry operator, what do you do with otherwise useless chunks of quartz? Naturally, you try to find a market for them. ![]() īeryl, feldspar, mica, spodumene, and other pegmatite minerals were and are in great demand for industrial purposes and as collector’s items, whereas the quartz is mostly a waste material. Mineralogists, having long debated what causes the pinkish coloring of rose quartz, recently concluded that the color is due to minute amounts of a Fe-Ti mineral akin to dumortierite. Quartz comes in several hues-white, smoky, rose, pink, and amethyst-depending on trace elements in the matrix or environmental conditions. In and among these giants are found masses of quartz, which is usually the last thing to crystallize as the fluid cools. Other pegmatites have yielded huge sheets of mica and lenses of spodumene. The Bumpus Mine, for example, yielded a single beryl crystal that was 27 feet long, and equally gigantic feldspar crystals. The water, circulating freely for eons, permits the growth of enormous minerals. Pegmatites are the crystallized remains of this rare-element-and-quartz-rich soup, and their contents are often astonishing. Leftover after this early process, wandering lonely in a boiling slurry of water and silica, are the geeks and wallflowers among the elements: oddities such as beryllium, boron, titanium, and lithium, whose size or geometry make it difficult for them to form minerals unless there is a lot of circulating fluid (the social director?). One can picture this process as a sort of dating game, in which popular elements find partners, pair up, and remove themselves from circulation. These elements combine to form granite’s common minerals-mica, pyroxene, feldspar, and quartz (SiO 4)-as the melt cools. ![]() ![]() The chief elements in the hot granitic melt are silicon, oxygen, aluminum, calcium, iron, magnesium, and sodium. Granites are formed from low-density molten material that makes its ways slowly up through earth’s continental crust from depth. Three factors contributed to their appearance at the Cemetery: 1) the opening of pegmatite quarries in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Maine, such as the Bumpus pegmatite quarry in Oxford County, Maine, opened in 1927 2) an increasing fashion for “natural” boulder monuments and 3) the New England Hurricane of September 1938. Mount Auburn has over twenty such boulder monuments, made of rose quartz, dating from the late 1930s onward. What are these stones, where did they come from, and what do they mean? Throughout Mount Auburn Cemetery and many other burial places in the United States, visitors come upon rough boulders of pink translucent stone bearing nameplates of bronze or slate. Not intentionally playtesters would inevitably want to play with their partner. Fares said Hazelight brought couples in to playtest the game. Players constantly must exercise prosocial relationship behavior to play effectively. It Takes Two isn’t a deep game, but it is a telling one. Players rehearse a steady “ one, two, three” every half hour. Let’s make the players talk.” As one player plummets down a slide, the other is forced to remove barriers (printed with cute animals) that only the first player can see and call out. “It’s not just a game where it’s about love, so we made mechanics out of that,” he says. As any couple’s therapist would tell you, c o-lab-or-ation means communication. It happens on a higher level than the metaphor-puzzles the game excels at. What makes It Takes Two work, in his eyes, is the union between story and game. He gamely said it may have entered into It Takes Two subconsciously. Rose is what binds them, first and foremost. Once Cody and May traverse the snowy mountain where they had their first ski trip, all contained within a small mantleside snowglobe, Rose takes it between her two hands and peers in. ![]() ![]() After her parents fight tooth-and-nail through a level designed after a given household object, Rose, a titan compared to her doll parents, will almost always thoughtlessly pick it up. ![]() What looms large, literally, over squabbles of all proportions is the couple’s daughter Rose. What if instead of struggling to measure up on scales large and small, Cody and May redefine what time means for them? “In the ‘therapy levels,’ as I call them,” says Fares, “we use the mechanics to talk about their specific problems in their relationship, which I think are universal: passion, giving time to each other, and attraction.” The big clock governs them. A magical, Puss-in-Boots-voiced relationship therapy book coaches the couple along (and antagonizes them), yelling co-lab-or-ation! every chance he gets. “For some narrative experiences, we should include mechanics as part of the storytelling,” says Fares. And so if Cody doesn’t paint the wasp’s nest with nectar, May can’t explode it and neither of them can continue on. “We use a lot of metaphors through mechanics,” says Josef Fares, founder of It Takes Two developer Hazelight Studios.Īs Cody and May battle through maximized portions of their home, like the squirrel-run military base occupying their tree, they continually receive complementary and contrasting abilities-like a gun full of flammable nectar and a match-shooter. Pushing aside the sad reality that few AAA video games take love as their subject, It Takes Two does more than be about love. It is only playable by two people, either online or together in the same room. Its greatest success, though, is its perfect synergy between plot and play. Each one of the never-ending stream of new gameplay loops feels good, never forced or unwieldy. Delightful details, from ’90s dentist shop toys to anthropomorphic vacuums, fill each level. First and most importantly, it is uncommonly fun, satisfying, and innovative-perhaps clearing the high bar Portal 2 set for co-op games. The staging ground for their relationship squabbles has grown from a petri dish to the cosmos. Above and below the glass floor is infinity. The background suddenly shifts from “Mommy space” to galactic space. As they venture deeper, more space-themed toys appear: Discovery Store-style plasma balls, a hanging solar system mobile. “Cause you’re always working,” Cody retorts. To return to their properly proportioned lives, May and Cody climb through the cushions.Ĭody banters: “Rose calls it ‘Mommy space,’ ya know, as in ‘outer space.’” May says she didn’t know that. The floor, which winds on forever, is stacked tall with pillows many times their size. It’s not two dining chairs with a draped-blanket roof. In the new co-op game It Takes Two, May and her husband Cody, who have been transformed into tiny dolls, crawl through the pillow fort she built for their daughter Rose. Small transgressions are metonymic, stand-ins for the real issues: gendered housework expectations your partner stumbling home at midnight from god knows which club how damn indecisive they are about everything. At the same time, love is the destroyer of scale. “I don’t know, what do you want for dinner?” Fighting material. In long-term relationships, it’s always the small things. 12/31/2023 0 Comments Simple floating clock mac![]() Countdown Timer PlusĬountdown Timer Plus by Aravindhan Parasuram is another free app in the Mac App Store and this one is a bit different to the other two. The app is good, but it costs more than I am willing to pay. You can show the menu bar, Today widget or both. The Countdowns app also has a Today panel widget that shows the same information. You can always see how many days or hours to an event or the progress to an event. The first item on the list can be shown in the menu bar if you prefer and so it is always visible. The app lets you set a date and a time for an event and add it to a list (only one item for free). The Progress option lets you measure the progress instead of counting down and you set a start date and end date, and it tells you the percentage progress. You can create your own events of course and there is a choice of Countdown, Short Countdown or Progress. This makes them very easy to set up and you just select the one you want from a list. The app comes with some predefined countdown timers to common events. The Pro version with no limits costs US $9.99 (UK £9.99), which is quite expensive for what it does. ![]() The main limitation is that the free version only supports one countdown event.
